Frequently Asked Questions

Is 49er Rebound Required?
Yes, your college expects you to participate in and complete your 49er Rebound program option. Students who complete their 49er Rebound are three times more likely to be eligible to return the next semester compared to students who do not complete the program. 49er Rebound not only helps students learn skills to succeed academically, your participation demonstrates your commitment to success.
Which 49er Rebound option should I choose?
You should choose the option that works best for your life and academic goals. All the options help students to be successful and teach similar concepts, but the formats are different. If you would like to receive academic credit for participation, UCOL 1300 may be the best option. If you don’t have room in your schedule for another credit bearing class, but you would like to be in a group with your peers than UCOL 1305 may be best. If you’d prefer to work one-on-one with a peer mentor, then SOS Peer Mentoring might be the best option. Ultimately it is up to you to decide which is best for your particular situation. If you’d like to discuss the options with someone, contact your College Representative.
How do I complete the 49er Rebound Program?
Completion of 49er Rebound depends on the option the student chooses. Students who earn an A or B in UCOL 1300, attend 10 UCOL 1305 sessions, or attend at least 10 SOS peer mentoring sessions are considered “complete.”
How do I enroll in my option?
The easiest way to enroll is to attend a 49er Rebound Workshop. If a student cannot attend one of the workshops, they will need to contact their College Representative to schedule a one-on-one appointment to complete their enrollment. Students must enroll by the add/drop deadline.
I took classes over the summer and my cumulative GPA is now over 2.0. Am I still required to participate in 49er Rebound?
Academic standing is only calculated in May and December. As such, students who take summer courses that raise their cumulative GPA above a 2.0 will remain on Academic Probation for the fall semester. Students in this situation are still expected to participate in and complete 49er Rebound to help them continue the gains they made over the summer.
My transfer GPA was well above 2.0. I don’t understand how my GPA dropped below a 2.0 after one semester.
While Transfer students’ course work from other institutions are applied to their degree, the grades are not. Only classes taken at UNC Charlotte factor into the GPA of Transfer students. If their first semester GPA is below a 2.0, a Transfer student will be placed on academic probation, regardless of their GPA prior to enrolling at UNC Charlotte.
How does academic probation impact my financial aid?
Academic probation can impact financial aid through Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements. All financial aid recipients are required to meet SAP according to federal regulations and policies set by UNC Charlotte. The intent of these policies is to ensure that students who are receiving financial aid are making measurable progress toward completion of an approved major. Watch this helpful video for more information on SAP or visit the Niner Central website.
What happens if I still get suspended after participating?
We realize that some students need more than one semester to see substantial academic gains. Should you successfully complete 49er Rebound and appeal your suspension, the program is prepared to advocate on your behalf. For example, we might provide a letter confirming your completion of 49er Rebound requirements. More information about academic suspension can be found here.
I am an adult or nontraditional student, how can this program help me?
We’ve developed different 49er Rebound options to fit different students’ needs. Our instructors and peer mentors are trained to work with a diverse group of students, including adult students. In addition, the SOS Peer Mentoring program actively recruits adult and veteran peer mentors to work with students experiencing academic difficulty. Our research shows that adult students who complete 49er Rebound dramatically increase their term GPAs, sometimes even more than traditionally aged students.
Can I participate in an option even if I’m not on academic probation?
49er Rebound options are typically reserved for students who are on Academic Probation after their first semester of enrollment. If you are close to being on probation or concerned about your ability to be successful and would like help with studying tips, stress management, test taking skills, etc. consider utilizing one of our many support services within the UCAE.
What is the quickest way to increase my GPA?
The best way to increase your GPA is to play to your strengths. If there are subjects in which you are likely to earn better grades, take those classes. If there are subjects that are problematic for you, consider taking them when you are back in Good Academic Standing. Increasing your GPA takes time, patience, and effort. See the Course Recommendations page for other suggestions.
